The Puskás Award is the goal-of-the-year prize, and the list of Puskás Award winners below covers every year since 2009. The award has done something the tournament awards rarely do: put players from small leagues on the same stage as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo won the first one in 2009. A player from Penang won in 2016, and in 2022 the award went to a player from the Polish amputee league.
Puskás was born in Budapest in 1927 and became the centre of the Hungary team that went unbeaten for years in the early 1950s, the side later called the Golden Team. He scored 84 goals in 85 internationals for Hungary according to the statistics foundation RSSSF, though other counts give 83 in 84. After leaving Hungary he joined Real Madrid, won the European Cup with them and played four times for Spain. He died in November 2006.
FIFA named its goal-of-the-year award after him in 2009. Its own description of what it rewards is short: the most spectacular goal of the qualifying period, which usually runs from late summer to late summer.
Long-range shots dominated the early years. Cristiano Ronaldo’s shot from around 40 yards for Manchester United against Porto won in 2009, Hamit Altıntop’s volley for Turkey in 2010, and Zlatan Ibrahimović’s overhead kick from about 35 yards against England in 2013. Neymar won in 2011 with a solo goal for Santos against Flamengo, and Miroslav Stoch took 78% of the 2012 vote with a volley for Fenerbahçe.
The 2014 award went to James Rodríguez for the same volley that won the World Cup Goal of the Tournament. The next two went a long way from the big leagues: Wendell Lira in the Campeonato Goiano, a Brazilian state championship, in 2015, and Mohd Faiz Subri’s swerving free kick in Malaysia in 2016. Olivier Giroud’s scorpion kick for Arsenal in 2017 and Mohamed Salah’s derby goal for Liverpool in 2018 brought it back to the Premier League, before Dániel Zsóri’s added-time overhead kick for Debrecen won in 2019.
Son Heung-min won in 2020 with a solo run against Burnley, the first Korean winner. Erik Lamela’s rabona for Tottenham at Arsenal on 14 March 2021 beat Patrik Schick’s EURO goal and Mehdi Taremi’s overhead kick against Chelsea. Marcin Oleksy’s 2022 overhead kick for Warta Poznań, scored on crutches, made him the first amputee footballer to win. Guilherme Madruga won in 2023 from Brazil’s Série B, Alejandro Garnacho in 2024 with his overhead kick at Goodison Park, and Santiago Montiel in 2025 with another one, from outside the box, for Independiente.
Overhead and bicycle kicks have now won five of the last seven awards, and the Puskás Award winners list shows how far the balance has moved since Ronaldo’s long shot. If you were building a Puskás shortlist from scratch, that is where you would start.
In its early years the result came from a fan vote alone. In its current form FIFA shortlists the goals, eleven in recent editions, and two groups vote: a panel of FIFA Legends and fans registered on FIFA.com. Each group carries half the weight, however many people vote in it. Each voter picks three goals, and the points are added up, which is why recent winners are shown in points rather than percentages: Montiel had 21 in 2025, made up of 13 from the panel and 8 from fans, while Declan Rice and Lamine Yamal tied second on 17.
In 2024 FIFA added the Marta Award for the best goal in women’s football, named after the Brazilian forward. Marta herself won the first one, and Lizbeth Ovalle of Tigres won in 2025 with a reverse scorpion kick against Guadalajara.
